From building confidence to improving their grades – there are many ways that a private maths tutor can help your child. What’s more, the digital boom and explosion in remote learning means it’s never been easier for parents and children to access 1-1 lessons with an experienced tutor.

In this post, we’ll cover some of the most common ways that maths tuition could help your child.

1. A maths tutor can banish anxiety and build confidence.

Confidence is matters just as much as knowledge when it you’re solving maths problems. This means that students who lack self-belief may not perform to the best of their ability. A private maths tutor can be invaluable at any stage of learning, helping your child build the confidence and self-belief they need to succeed. Once their confidence improves, their grades do too, as our client K.C. discovered:

“George tutored my son for a year. In this period, the teachers (UCS school, London) noted a marked improvement in his performance both in the classroom and with homework. He also gained a lot more confidence during his time with George, and as a result was able and willing to tackle tasks that previously he wouldn’t have attempted.”

2. Private tuition means lessons at your child’s pace

Maths lessons in school are designed to fit the learning goals of the class, not the individual child. The problem with this is that every child learns at a different pace. So, for the classroom lessons may be too fast-paced for children who take longer to grasp complex concepts. Equally, maths lessons in school may not be challenging enough for children who are well ahead of the class average. A private maths tutor works with your child on a 1-1 basis, allowing their needs, not the needs of their classmates, to set the pace.  So if your child is falling behind, or they need an extra challenge to stay motivated, private maths tuition could help. Who knows – they could even end up falling in love with maths and entering maths competition like our student M did!!

3. A private maths tutor can help with exam preparation

Children aged 10-18 face many milestone exams including GCSEs, A-levels, the 11-plus and entrance exams. Getting the right results can transform your child’s future, opening doors to the best schools and the top universities, as our client F.K found when her daughter made the cut for 5 top London schools, including Francis Holland school.

Private maths tuition can help give your child the edge they need to get the top grades in their upcoming exams. Remember though, the speed at which tuition will improve your child’s performance varies. It could take six months for your child to move from a low D grade to a good C or higher. So, if your child has an exam on the horizon, invest in a private maths tutor ahead of time. This will leave your child well-prepared for whatever challenges the test papers have in store.

4. Making maths fun

Maths has an image problem. Ask most young people to describe maths, and you’ll hear the words “boring” and “complicated” time and time again. These misconceptions usually arise because  a child has had negative experiences of maths lessons in school – dreary lessons and poor explanations of new concepts can leave students confused and anxious, or just plain bored. If your child needs to rediscover the joy of maths, then private tuition can provide an extra-curricular, outside-the-box approach that brings the fun, as well as the learning, as our client discovered:

“My daughter enjoys her maths lessons with George, and I love hearing ‘Yes!’ in the background when she solves a maths problem.”

5. Private tuition means a better, more flexible learning environment

Some children thrive in a 1-1 learning environment, finding it easier to focus and develop and understanding of a subject than they ever could in the classroom. This could be due to private lessons having less disruptions and distractions then the classroom environment. However, it’s worth remembering that the learning environment isn’t just physical, it is psychological too. If your child feels like they are underperforming compared to their peers, anxiety may set in. Private maths lessons provide a calm, judgement-free environment where your child can learn their way without any pressure or interruptions. They also offer greater flexibility for your child. Let’s face it – if your child isn’t a morning person, 9am may not be the best time for them to absorb new information about maths. Private tuition, delivered in person or online, fits around your child’s schedule and their optimum learning times.
